Condition first, then remove conditioning

Problem

Let Z∼Bernoulli⁡(1/4)Z\sim\operatorname{Bernoulli}(1/4). Conditional on Z=0Z=0, XX has mean 00 and variance 11; conditional on Z=1Z=1, XX has mean 44 and variance 11. Find E[X∣Z]E[X\mid Z], E[X]E[X], and Var⁡(X)\operatorname{Var}(X).

Reveal answer or reference solution

The conditional mean is E[X∣Z]=4ZE[X\mid Z]=4Z. Therefore

E[X]=E[4Z]=1E[X]=E[4Z]=1

Also E[Var⁡(X∣Z)]=1E[\operatorname{Var}(X\mid Z)]=1, while

Var⁡(E[X∣Z])=Var⁡(4Z)=16(14)(34)=3\operatorname{Var}(E[X\mid Z])=\operatorname{Var}(4Z) =16\left(\frac14\right)\left(\frac34\right)=3

By total variance, Var⁡(X)=1+3=4\operatorname{Var}(X)=1+3=4.
