One k-means iteration

Problem

For the points $\{0,2,7,9\}$ and initial centers $1$ and $8$ , perform one assignment and center update. Give the updated centers and within-cluster sum of squares.

Reveal answer or reference solution

The clusters are $\{0,2\}$ and $\{7,9\}$ . Their means remain $1$ and $8$ . The objective is

(0-1)^2+(2-1)^2+(7-8)^2+(9-8)^2=4.
